Aca estoy (I'm here!)

I'm home!  It's been just over 48 hours since I landed in LA, and I'm still a bit disoriented, although I'm sure that will wear off in a bit.  Flying into LA I enjoyed seeing all the palm trees that are unique to the area.  I never really thought about how cool it is that we have palm trees lining our streets, sticking up tall above everything else, the high rise of trees.  I also noticed all the baseball diamonds and football fields.  I've already been completely overwhelmed by the amount of choices I have in the grocery store for basically everything, and how loud everyone talks on their cell phones in public places.  I also have to rememeber not to bump into people or shove them out of the way while waiting in line for something, or to say "excuse me", as I got used to a different sense of personal space and courtesy.  I also have to be careful while driving to actually follow the rules and stay in my own lane.  I've only burst out with a spanish expression once or twice, and I'm really enjoying understanding everything that everyone is saying to me.  The other day when I went to the beach in Laguna Niguel and watched the amazing sunset it was hard to wrap my mind around the fact that only a few days ago I was standing at the bottom of the world.  Ah America, it's good to be home.

Finally! Here's a few pics from my trip down south!

They don't look as good on here as they did on my camera, so when I get home I'll have to fix the coloring and all that.  Enjoy!

My good friend Karen (from England) and I in our favorite coffee shop, Havannah, in Puerto Madryn.

Yep, that cruise ship's how I arrived in Puerto Madryn...I wish!

Waiting for our bus from Puerto Madryn to Rio Gallegos.  That's me, Christine (from LA too!), Karen, and Ryan (from Sacramento).  Notice our little friend behind me to the left, which explains why I'm smiling so big!

Perito Moreno Glacier near El Calafate.  Pictures can't do it justice.

The glacier is behind me, though it doesn't show up well on this screen.  It was FUH-reeeezong!

Me (in the eskimo suit!), Christine, and Geoof (from England).

Yes that's me!

Ice trekking!

A view of Ushuaia, the southern most city in the world, from sea.

On the boat headed for the penguins.  Geoff is drinking mate.

Sea lion colony.

At last, the penguin colongy!!!!

Through binoculars.

To the ends of the earth!!!

So I'm in Ushuaia, the southern most city in the world!!!  I'm practically in Antarctica!  Well, this could be the farthest south I may ever get, so I consider myself at the ends of the world.  After what seemed like the longest bus journey ever, we arrived and are staying with friends of friends.  The hospitality of the people in Argentina is overwhelming.  There are 5 of us, staying with a family of 5 in a 2 room house.  Not a 2 bedroom, but a 2 room, an upstairs and downstairs.  They've moved everything around to accomodate us, and even though we're totally inconvienient for them, that's the last thing they would want us to feel.  That's the difference between Argentine and American hospitality I think.  If we had a house too small, we wouldn't invite a bunch of people to stay there because we know we wouldn't have space to accomodate them.  Space is a strong value in our culture.  But here relationship is the most important thing, and so even though there's practically no room for us, they are really glad to have us stay with them and share and bit of their life with them.  This is a kingdom culture value I'm learning about.

words cannot describe

Almost a month has gone by since I posted last.  I actually don't believe it.  Really, the time has flown by, these last few weeks have been a crazy whirlwind.  I suppose I've procrastinated a bit, thinking about all the things I need to write about and catch up on, but I'm giving in and just writing about what I'm experiencing now.  So for the next few hours my friends and I are in El Calafate, which is this little touristy town in the south east of Patagonia near the Pertio Moreno Glacier.  We did some ice trekking today on the glacier, and it is absolutely breathtaking.  Literally, I'm without words to describe it.  I almost cried for the sheer beauty of it today.  Pictures to come soon.  I've never been so cold in my life!!!  I was actually wearing all the sweaters and warm layers I brought on this little trip and I was still freezing!  Surprisingly, once you're out hiking around on the ice it's not so cold, but as soon as the sun dips behind a cloud it's back to freezing.  This was one of those days when everything seems to be perfect, when time seems to stand still and you don't see anything except for this awesome workmanship, the hand craft of the Great Craftsman.  It literally took my breath away, the power and beauty of God, and the way He puts everything into order.  I can only remember experiencing something like that one other time in my life.  It was in Jordan on the mountain supposedly where Elijah ascended and a theoritical place of Noah's Ark ( I can't remember the name off the top of my head, as it's late and well, I have been glacier trekking today).  My friends and I watched an amazing sunset over the desert, and thinking nothing could be more perfect we turned around to walk back to the bus and a full moon was rising!!  I think that song by Chris Tomlin describes it pretty well, "Indescribable!  Uncomparable!  You placed the stars in the sky and you know them by name!  You are amazing God!"
